Grand opening of the Karel Morávek Nature Trail

25. 6. 2020
On Wednesday, June 24, at 10 am, the renovated Karel Morávek Nature Trail in the vicinity of Soběšice was ceremoniously opened.

By means of this educational trail, the foresters of the FFWT MENDELU wish to show the diversity of local forests, how forests work and how difficult it is to take care of forests in times of climate change.

The trail is more than seven kilometres long, offering seven stops with interesting information about nature. You can download information at individual sites using QR codes.

The route starts near the Malinová bus stop in Brno-Soběšice and follows the historic Forest Nature Trail, which was founded by forester, conservationist and respected pedagogue Radomír Mrkva and landscape architect Ivar Otruba.

“Of the original trail, only the brick/stone-built elements at the beginning of the footpath remain. These have been restored and supplemented with wooden elements bearing statements by famous personalities,” said Jitka Fialová (Department of Civil Engineering and Landscape Management), one of the creators of the current footpath.

The nature trail ends at the Karel Morávek Memorial.

Karel Morávek (1877-1934) was an important forester in the first half of the 20th century. He is greatly credited for the development of the aesthetic and recreational function of forests. He had footpaths built with rest areas and benches and exotic trees planted in the vicinity of Brno. He is buried in the Soběšice cemetery, which he had helped to establish
